Frequently asked questions
What is Dictaly?
Dictaly is a voice dictation app. You speak, and it writes clean, punctuated text without filler words, then types it into the app you're using or copies it for you to paste.
Is Dictaly free?
Yes. The free plan includes 2,500 words a week, and you only need an email address to sign up.
Which languages does it support?
About 100 languages, including English, Spanish, French, German, Hindi, Chinese and Japanese. Dictaly can detect the language automatically, and can translate what you say into English.
Which apps can I dictate into?
With the desktop app for Windows or macOS, any app where you can type: Gmail, Outlook, Word, Slack, Teams, Notes and more. With the Chrome extension, any text box on a website. On dictaly.ai, you dictate and copy the text.
How is Dictaly different from built-in voice typing?
Built-in voice typing writes down every word, including “um”s and false starts, and usually needs spoken punctuation. Dictaly cleans up what you said, adds punctuation, follows the tone you choose and learns your names and terms from your dictionary.
Do you keep my recordings?
Only if Save recordings is on, so you can replay them in History. Saved recordings are deleted after a year, and you can turn saving off or delete recordings, history or your account at any time in Privacy Settings.
Do I need an internet connection?
Yes. Your speech is transcribed and cleaned up on Dictaly's servers, so Dictaly needs to be online.
How do I install the desktop app or the Chrome extension?
Download the installer for Windows or macOS, or add the extension from the Chrome Web Store, using the buttons on this page. Then sign in with your Dictaly account.
